Hey young girl…young black girl!
Tell me, what has the world done to you?
Because I’m looking at you , And
I can see you don’t know just how beautiful you are!
And I swear it hurts my heart;
To see the insecurity in your eyes…
Such a hard pill to swallow
And you can’t bare to face it
So you avoid looking in the mirror.
Because your mind’s reflection is a depiction
Of what conventional beauty is NOT…
But sister, that’s where you’re wrong. So wrong!
See, you’re far more powerful than you’ve ever known
Or should I say, more than you’ve ever been “told”.
And quite frankly, that’s where all this self-loathing developed in the first place.
You’ve been taught to hate yourself,
And now you hold deep rooted envy and contempt
For your fair skinned adversary.
You see her as superior;
And it’s a shame,
You don’t even know who you are.
You don’t even know that you,
You were born atop of the hierarchy, Universally.
Your melanin birthed the world around you.
It is indeed true…
"The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice".
Society debases your existence
Only to hide the truth.
Those full lips, that prominent nose, those distinctive eyes…
The curve of your hips,
The thickness of your thighs…
You are BEAUTIFUL…
I see you. i see your soul.
I know it’s hurting;
I know growing up you always felt unworthy.
Left with feelings of inadequacy.
Bleaching skin, desperately seeking a sense of “superiority”.
Adversely, you’ll do more harm than good;
Stripping layers of your deep melanin skin,
Simultaneously stripping yourself of the Power that lies within.
All I can do is pray,
Pray that you stop searching for love in all the wrong places.
Letting men mistreat you,
Thinking that’s the only way you can keep him…
Sister you don’t deserve it!
Or that pain.
Lord, I pray…
That one day you find peace within.
Learn to love the darkness of your chocolate skin.
Never mind perception…
Embrace the power of your ancestry.
Under the deepness of your melanin
There lies unfathomable majesty
You are a Queen, act accordingly!
Embrace each shape, size and shade.
Embrace the diversity
Embrace the hate!
Know you are a supreme being;
Open your mind, body, and soul
To the divinity placed upon you.
God’s greatest gift to man,
The beauty of your deep melanin skin.
Sister, I love you
